About Merle Yost, LMFT

I grew up in an unusual family that normalized things like ghosts and talking with angels. Some of it was good, and some of it not. I, like everyone, was shaped by my family. Being the middle child by 15 mins left me, in many ways, the odd man out. An observer from the beginning, the lost child who watched and wondered where I fit in. Even though I started college as a music major, it was not my passion but something I knew I could do. Soon, the world called, and I began to explore more universes. Because of my work to heal through psychotherapy, I eventually returned to school to become a psychotherapist. This path has been the focal point of my life since I was 25 years old.

Being a child of the 80s, or at least a young adult, I jumped headfirst into the New Age movement and discovered many different world views. Having been raised in a Christian Cult loosely tied to the Southern Baptist Church, I felt torn between these different worlds.

The best gift from my mother was normalizing my ability to see energy. It never occurred to me to question it, and that made my journey into energy psychology so much easier. I did not discount my experience, while I still tried to make sense of my experience in the world on all levels.

While my childhood was violent, abusive, and intrusive, it gave me insight into how people function, why they do awful things, and call it love. We as humans have normalized many behaviors because it was all we knew. It is when we interact with others that we discover this is not everyone's normal.

I remember somewhere between 6-10 of being invited to the coolest kid's house for Halloween. He lived in a very nice place, and I saw a world I had never encountered before when I went in. I crawled under the dining table and refused to come. There is no memory after that. But I suddenly knew that my family was different. It was not like the ones that I saw on TV, like the home I was now in. Those places were real.

We all live in alternate universes, some more obvious than others. My choice to go into psychology to ground what I was exposed to in the New Age environment has allowed me to translate these words for others.

I have combined ancient wisdom with new and old research to attempt to make sense of the crazy world we live in. I hope that my journey will make yours easier.
